What is the PLAN OF INVESTIGATION?
The PLAN OF INVESTIGATION is an outline of how you, the student, plan to conduct the SBA. It focuses on your reason for choosing your topic, as well as your selection of the title. It is a partial group effort that looks at the reason behind the group’s choice of theme, identifying the subtopics chosen by each group member The individual section comes with the identification of why the individual’s theme was chosen  and how the individual intends to collect and use information in the presentation and, finally, an identification of the expected benefits of completing the SBA to the members of the group. The Plan of Investigation should be between 125-150 words.

Questions for the PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
  1. Why did the group choose this general topic/theme?
  2. What are the sub-topics chosen by individuals in the group?
  3. Why was the individual sub-topic chosen?
  4. How do you intend to collect relevant information on your topic and use this in  your presentation?
  5. What are the expected benefits of completing the SBA to the members of the group?

Tips for Answering the questions
Question 1: This response should not be a generic ‘all the members were interested in this theme’ response. The response has to show some personal                       connection to the theme.
Question 2: There should also be a list of the topics for each group member, with their names.
Question 3: You must clearly state the title of the topic and give an insightful and original reason for your individual choice of topic. Therefore, you                       cannot simply state that you are interested in the topic. You, the student, must state some personal interest in it, possibly based on an                             experience that you have had.
Question 4: The proposal for the collection of material looks specifically at how you, the student, intend to collect the source. For this section, you                         need to answer how, what and where. The how can be answered with verbs such as read and search. What refers to the identification of                       the source (articles, short stories, comic strips, music videos) and where refers to where the source was found, for example, the internet.                       Therefore, when approaching the question of how you plan to carry out the research, some possible responses could be:
  • Search the internet for (articles)
  • Read anthologies in order to select excerpts from (short stories)
  • Read the newspaper in order to procure (articles)
  • Search the internet for appropriate (comic strips)
  • Search the internet, via Youtube, in order to find (music videos)
Question 5: Your answer must be specific. This answer should relate to an English Language skill that will be accessed, or sharpened, during the                             process of conducting the research. Here are some possible options. This research will help me, as an English student, to:
  • Develop/ enhance the ability to use Standard English.
  • Develop/ enhance the ability to edit and assess documents.
  • Develop/ enhance writing skills.
  • Develop/ enhance summary writing skills.
  • Develop/ enhance expository writing skills.
  • Develop/ enhance narrative writing skills.

EXAMPLE: Plan of Investigation
The theme ‘Music’ was chosen because the group is interested in conducting a clinical investigation into the purpose behind music and the impact that different types of music have on people. The sub-topics that the group members have chosen to pursue are ‘Dancehall as destructive’, ‘Jazz and its effect on the brain’, ‘The Evolution of Hip Hop’, and ‘The legacy of Reggae’. I chose to research ‘The Legacy of Reggae’ because I am a proud Jamaican who wants to be able to answer queries about Reggae music, a product of Jamaica, when asked about it during my travels. I will collect information by conducting online research to find (www.bulbsoup.com) articles and videos, as well as read anthologies and blogs to locate an appropriate poem. By conducting this research, I will develop English Language skills such as summary writing, constructing narrative pieces and writing expository pieces.
