REFLECTION #3: How the research has made the student a better person
REFLECTION (combined)
Before conducting the research, I believed that women with natural hair were at a distinct disadvantage because they would not be viewed as attractive, when compared to their chemically enhanced sisters. This view originated from years of observing boys being drawn to the long haired girls, versus the natural haired girl. The research has changed my view of this topic because I now see that the natural hair is not something to be ashamed of. It is not only (www.bulbsoup.com) appreciated by some people, but celebrated, as seen in the poem ‘Resilience’. I also realize, from India Arie’s song ‘I Am Not My Hair’, that women can break free of the stereotypes that surround their hair and discover who they really are, outside of the context of their hair. In essence, one’s hair does not have to define them. Finally, the article ‘Discipline is at the Crux of the Issue’, highlights that sometimes the state of one’s hair is not the problem, but one’s actions might be at issue. This research, therefore, has inspired me to start my natural hair journey.
Two prose pieces and a poem were used in my research. The prose sources were an article, from the newspaper, and a song, which was retrieved from the internet. The poem also doubles as my only audio/ visual source and the poem was extracted from an anthology. The language in the article was formal, while the poem and the song had informal registers. The formality of the newspaper article was seen in the statement ‘Students need to clearly understand there are rules that govern the regular operation of schools and those that speak to the deportment of those attending (www.bulbsoup.com) these institutions’. This is formal because of the particular words that are used, such as ‘govern’ and ‘deportment’. The use of these words implies that the content being addressed is serious, and the writer wants the reader to take it seriously. The poem and the song, on the other hand, are informal because, in both artefacts, the language flows in a musical and informal manner. The song highlights its informality in sentences like ‘it’s time for us to redefine who we be’, which is the use of slang, while the poem does the same with its musical and ‘sing songy’ tone.
The process of conducting this research has made me a better person because I have become more tolerant. This is the case because I had to work in a group, which stretched me because I had to compromise on important decisions. I had to think beyond myself and what I wanted, and make decisions for the good of the group. Therefore, I have experienced personal growth and development.
