Paragraph Writing - Language Notes

A paragraph is a group of sentences that all center on one idea. A paragraph is made of four elements:
  • topic sentence
  • sentences that support the topic sentence
  • explanation of the sentences that support the topic sentences
  • concluding sentence

Example
Topic sentence/main idea: My brother is the cutest little baby in the world.

Supporting sentences: He is a chubby little bundle of joy who has the (a) cutest dimples, (b) huge laughing eyes, and (c) the most beautiful toothless grin.

Explanation/ expansion of supporting sentences: Every one knows that dimples, big eyes and a toothless smile makes for a very cute baby. These factors, together, make a baby irresistible to people and they automatically react by smiling and cooing at them.

Concluding sentence: These are just a few of the reasons behind my brother being classified as the cutest little boy in the world.

Elements
Other elements of paragraph writing includes:
  • unity - every sentence in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence
  • order - the sentences should be arranged in a logical sequence. this means that the most important idea comes first.
  • coherence - each sentence should flow smoothly into the next and all the sentences should be connected by the topic sentence
  • completeness - a final sentence that ties the paragraph together, the concluding sentence, is necessary because the paragraph is not left hanging.
