eSSAY


An essay is a piece of writing that seeks to do one of the following; persuade/ argue, inform/ tell, explain, analyze or explore a topic. It is usually organized in paragraphs, which follows a particular structure that allows us, the reader, to follow the topic under discussion. In this context, you are required to produce an essay that is characterized by five paragraphs, the first is the introduction, the following three are the body paragraphs and the fifth and final paragraph is the conclusion.

Characteristics of a good essay are that it is clear and focused, organized, logical, it has strong topic sentences, uses proper grammar and punctuation, as well as relevant examples and explanations. PEEL can ensure that your essay is all of the above. It is a technique used to structure your paragraph that ensures that you have a single, clear and focused argument. Essentially, it allows you to create a paragraph that is accessible and easy to understand. The acronym PEEL means, point, explain, evidence and link. Here is an example of a PEEL paragraph:

Checklist for an Essay
  1. Introduction - Your introduction should have a clear thesis statement, with necessary background information.
  2. Body paragraphs - There should be three body paragraphs containing your topic sentence, explanation, evidence and a concluding sentence that links back to your thesis statement or essay question.
  3. Organization - Ensure that your paragraphs are arranged in a logical order and that the transitions between your paragraphs are smooth, connecting each paragraph.
  4. Conclusion - The thesis statement should be repeated in a fresh way.
  5. Language and Mechanics - Use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Avoid run on sentences and use proper paragraphing.
