An article provides information, discusses issues, explains ideas, or shares ideas, with an audience, and it is usually shared in a published newspaper, news letter or blog. They are usually written in clear language that seeks to engage an audience so that it can fulfil its purpose of informing, explaining, persuading, raising awareness or entertaining readers.
Types of Articles
A few characteristics of any good article are that it is: clear and engaging, uses paragraphs, transitions and sub headings effectively, it is factual and properly researched, free of bias except if it is meant to persuade, organized logically and the tone is appropriate to the audience. There are also many different types of articles, a few of these are news, feature, opinion/ editorial, expository, review and how to articles. All of these are articles that you could choose to write in the exam setting, with the two most relevant being the opinion/ editorial and the expository articles.

Checklist for an Article
- Title/ Article - The title should be short, attention grabbing and reflect the main idea of the article.
- Byline - The writer’s name, role and the organization should be placed in this section.
- Introduction - This should hook the reader immediately and introduce the topic clearly.
- Body paragraphs - There should be a topic sentence, along with appropriately used quotations, statistics and examples.
- Organization - The paragraphs should be logical, transitions smooth and clear and a suitable chronological structure; cause and effect or problem/ solution.
- Style - The language should be clear and engaging and the tone should be appropriate to the audience.
