Character list
Three Witches - These are extremely important minor characters who form the basis of the plot development of the play. Despite the fact that it is their prophecy that forms the main conflict in the play, we are not sure if their news was truly prophetic or just a self-fulfilling prophecy. The only thing that we are sure of is that they took a perverse pleasure in wreaking havoc on Macbeth’s life.
Hecate - She manages the witches. She is upset that they have not consulted her before they embarked on upending Macbeth’s life because she wanted to be a part of the fun.

Macbeth - A Scottish general who is characterized as fearless. He is approached by three witches who tell him of a prophecy that he will grow beyond his title of Thane of Glamis, to become Thane of Cawdor, then the king of Scotland. This prophecy leads him down the road of murdering all who stand in his way of achieving the goal of king and then maintaining that title. He does this with the blessing and motivation of his wife, Lady Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth - She is Macbeth’s wife. Lady Macbeth is very ambitious, so she is very excited about the witches’ prophecies about her husband’s future because they mean that she will become queen. She does everything in her power to motivate her husband, even disregarding her feminine nature, to ensure that he both gets the throne and maintains the throne. She is, however, overcome with guilt at the number of murders that were committed by herself and Macbeth and eventually commits suicide.

Banquo - A brave and noble general who fought beside Macbeth. He too received a prophecy from the witches that declared that his sons would become kings, but, despite this lure of success, he did not try to direct his fate. He is Macbeth’s second murder victim and the one that literally haunts him. It can be proposed that Macbeth is really haunted by the choice that he should have taken, which is to let fate take its course, instead of trying to direct it.
Fleance - This is Banquo’s son. He escaped the murderers, and we do not know where he went.

King Duncan - He is the king of Scotland and is reported to be a good and noble king who was loved by the people. He is Macbeth’s first victim because, in order to ascend the throne, Macbeth had to get rid of the person currently sitting on it. His murder heralded a time of disorder, chaos, and death for the Scottish kingdom.
Malcolm - He is King Duncan’s eldest son, and the person in line for the throne. He flees after his father’s murder and, with English support, along with MacDuff’s, he regains the throne. His ascension to the throne represents a return to the order that fled with King Duncan’s death.
Donalbain - He is King Duncan’s second son, who fled to Ireland when his father was murdered. He is the spare, not the heir, so nothing else is known about him.
