Tiger - He is an ambitious Indian man whose goal in life is to become educated. He is Urmilla’s husband and Boysie’s friend. Tiger wants to be a man, so he straddles the line between progressive ideas and traditional norms.
Urmilla - She is Tiger’s wife and Rita’s friend. She is a young Indian girl who is submissive towards her husband.
Rita Martin - She is Joe’s wife and Urmilla’s friend. She is portrayed as nosy, but it is this characteristic that facilitates her being a good friend to Urmilla. She is a Creole woman.
Joe Martin - He is Rita’s husband and a cautious friend to Tiger. He does not like his wife’s involvement in Urmilla and Tiger’s life, but he gives his wife the freedom to do as she pleases. He is a Creole man.
Sookdeo - He is Tiger’s tutor and the town’s drunkard and beating stick. Despite being consistently drunk, he is always seeking knowledge by reading the newspaper and stating facts at important intervals in the play. He is an Indian.
Tall Boy - He is the Chinese shopkeeper in Barataria. His shop is the community meeting point to discuss any and everything.
Boysie - He is Tiger’s friend. Boysie’s goal in life is to leave Trinidad and travel to America. He is an Indian.
John & Larry - Two American supervisors who work on the road construction project.
Dr. Wentworth - The English doctor who delivers Tiger and Urmilla’s baby.
Indian & Creole doctors - Both men rejected Tiger’s request for them to deliver his baby.
Postman - He delivers the announcement about the road construction.
Vendors, villagers & children
