MODULE 3: SPEAKING & WRITING
FORMS OF COMMUNICATION
A. Verbal
|
Relating to, or in the form of words. This applies particularly to speech and writing.
|
B. Non-Verbal
|
(i) Body language - this refers to gestures, posture, and facial expressions.
|
(ii) Use of space - Proxemics in communication involve the distance between ourselves and others when having a conversation, delivering a speech or a lecture, or sharing an intimate moment. The amount of space we leave between the other person and ourselves can signal our level of trust or relationship with that person. If we stand farther away from someone, we communicate nonverbally that we don't feel very close or safe with them. If we get close to another person, we communicate to them that we would like a more intimate relationship or feel safe with them. One example can include standing closer to someone when we are about to share something private. Another example can be backing away from someone when we feel that our personal space is being invaded.
(iii) Use of objects - the intentional or unintentional display of material things. It might be art objects, machines, clothing, jewelry, etc. It extends beyond clothing to other body adornments, such as wedding rings or binds to indicate marital status, tattoos, piercings, and brands. Also included in object communication is anything used as a status symbol. The types of clothing that an individual wears convey nonverbal cues about their personality, background, and financial status, and how others will respond to them.
(iv) Dress - Dress also includes the things that people wear such as jewelry, ties, handbags, hats, and glasses. Clothing conveys nonverbal clues about a speaker's personality, background, and financial status. Clothing makes a statement that expresses their sex, age, class, occupation, origin, and personality, as well as what they are or what they want to be at a particular moment. For example, a businessperson is recognized in a well-tailored suit.
(v) Graphics - Involves the use of charts, tables, and diagrams to communicate. Similar to a communication book, but the items are arranged on a single board or sheet. Charts communicate information visually. They can show patterns, help to identify correlations, and get a point across quickly. A table can be used if you're looking to display individual values if values are being compared, or if data is going to be shown and then summarized. They won't convey your story to the reader as quickly as a graph might, but you will still be conveying a large amount of information in an easy-to-understand way. The essence of a diagram can be seen as a form of visual formatting device. It is a display that does not show quantitative data (numerical data), but rather relationships and abstract information, with building blocks such as geometrical shapes connected by lines, arrows, or other visual links. Graphics allow us to understand the data more readily.
